Reynolds Boughton RB44

It would be logical to assume that these vehicles were ordered as replacements for various type of Land-Rover which had gone out of production in the 1970s and required replacement by the 1980s. The same factors which led to the purchase of UAZ 452 vans as discussed previously.
The hydraulic winches fitted were identical in design to the MKII Land-Rover winch and in fact still bore the Land-Rover logo on them.
Bodywork seems to have consisted of either crew cab luton box, or single cab with cherrypicker.
REYNOLDS BOUGHTON Ltd has won an order from the Southern Electricity Board for 43 of its four-wheel drive RB.44 chassis.
To meet its various daily servicing requirements, Southern Electricity has had its units fitted with two-ton hydraulic front mounted winches, and different types of bodies.
The British-designed and built 500kg RB.44 cross-country vehicle incorporates as standard a Boughton-manufactured twospeed transfer box with permanent four-wheel drive through a POWR-LOK differential.

SEB UAZ 452 "Trekmaster"
Towards the end of the 1970s SEB was looking to replace it's fleet of 1-Ton and 30cwt Land Rovers, however this proved very difficult as both of these models had gone out of production. The 30cwt Forward Control lasted until 1973, and the 1-Ton was axed in 1977. This led the board to have to search around for a suitable replacement. Land Rover steadfastly refused to re-introduce the 1-Ton and FC models.
The eventual replacement was the Russian built UAZ 452, sold in the UK as the "Trekmaster". These were purchased in 1979, although I have not yet been able to establish who imported them, or if they were built with right hand drive or converted in the UK. The vehicles SEB purchased were all van bodied and fitted with a winch. I have not as yet been able to identify the type of winch fitted however it is not apparently the same as the mayflower drum winch fitted to Land Rovers. It could even be an electric design. The only similar type I have seen is fitted to a Land Rover fire engine.

The vehicle in the photos was registered as CJH243V. CJH242V and CJH244V were also UAZ vehicles. None of these were on the road after 1983.

Bedford Lorry
This Bedford Lorry was registered in Portsmouth and so presumably worked in that area also. The tarpaulin on the front probably covers a winch, and the load bed could transport a drum of cable.
Austin Mini Van
SEB, like most of the National Boards, made extensive use of British made small vans. Minor 1000 vans were common as were Austin Mini vans. In later years vans like the Austin Metro, Ford Escort and Morris Marina were used.
Mini Vans were used for all sorts of tasks such as meter reading, checking street lighting and collecting money from coin-operated electricity meters. The one in the photograph was initially registered in Reading.

Southern Electricity Board Vehicles
Southern Electricity Board was brought into being in 1948, and became a private company upon de-nationalisation in 1989/90. This blog in intended to detail the vehicles used by the Board. I do not know everything about them, so I welcome input from readers and enthusiasts. I shall also try and note ex-SEB vehicles that have survived to the present day.
